Specialty Glass: Flashed Opal (GL700)
This is a colorless base glass with a thin coating of white flashed opal glass is used as vaulted glass ceiling panels. And is absolutely ideal for large expanses of illuminated ceiling glass panels that blend in perfectly with the whole design of the room.
The right lighting can make a decisive contribution to how we feel. After all, we spend the biggest part of our life in it. This applies just as much, if not more so, to public buildings with vast areas of artificial light such as banks, museums, and exhibition halls.
With our Flashed Opal glass, you can achieve diffused lighting very much like daylight with slight shadows. Unlike individual spotlights, or conventional suspended ceiling lights, Flashed Opal glass spreads the light evenly and as a result creates a very pleasant atmosphere.
What's more, the good light-handling properties of our Flashed Opal provide excellent color rendering. Which is why it is used so often to illuminate museums, art galleries, and fashion display areas.
NOTE: This glass style would be appropriate for some privacy applications.

Design Recommendations
The edge support width and thickness of the glass in the sub construction of illuminated ceilings depends on the size of the glass. For a 60cm x 60cm grid size for example, an edge support width of 15mm and 6mm thick laminated safety glass is recommended. When drawing up the final construction details, care should be taken to ensure that the geometrical arrangement of the luminaires in relation to the support frames does not cast any undesirable shadows.
Technical Tips
You can achieve the optimum effect with our Flashed Opal by ensuring that the spacing of the luminaires in relation to the Flashed Opal as well as between luminaire and luminaire is uniform. The minimum spacing between Flashed Opal and luminaires should be 20cm and the maximum spacing should not exceed 150cm.
Building Regulations
As in the case of other functional ceilings, the relevant building regulations authority stiplulates what type of, and how materials should be used. As in mandating the use of laminated safety glass for overhead glazing.
Toughening
Our Flashed Opal may be thermally toughened and shaped. Allowance must be made for the different viscosity behavior of the white flashed opal glass layer and the base glass. Heat treatment can result in a reduction in the degree of luminous transmittance with simultaneous convergence to ideal light diffusion.

In addition to even light distribution, using Flashed Opal glass offers you a host of other benefits:
- Low Void Height
- The void height required to ensure an evenly lit illuminated ceiling with Flashed Opal is very low.
- Color Neutral
- Flashed Opal is based on a colorless optical special glass and the white flashed opal glass layer is practically white. As a result there is no adverse effect on the luminous color of lthe light source.
- Scratch-Resistant
- Flashed Opal has a high resistance to scratching and is therefore impervious to surface damage.
- Non-Deforming
- Flashed Opal always retains its shape, independant of the type of lamp used.

The cross section pictured above shows the white opaque layer fused to the bottom of the glass (the opaque side being closest to the light source).
We have classified our glass products by our opinions of various levels of obscurity or transparency. However, these levels are subjective, privacy is relative, and we make no absolute claim of suitability to any purpose listed. Due to the nature of glass, only minimal information can be reflected photographically. Since only the glass itself can reveal its unique characteristics, samples of all our glass products are available for purchase.
